According to Media Reports, NASA has reported an unexpected acceleration in sea level rise in 2024, coinciding with the hottest year on record. According to satellite data, global sea levels rose 0.59 cm last year, exceeding the projected 0.43 cm per year. The primary causes include thermal expansion of warming oceans and melting glaciers, with NASA confirming that the rate of sea level rise has more than doubled since 1993. Over the past three decades, sea levels have risen by 10 cm, posing a severe threat to coastal cities and island nations. The UN has warned that low-lying areas in India, Bangladesh, China, the Netherlands, and Pacific islands are at high risk of flooding and displacement.
