Introduction of Garbage Collection Tax Following MUCT: A New Financial Burden for Karachi Residents, Aiming to Generate Rs. 10 Billion Annually
The Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) has formulated a plan to introduce a garbage collection tax, further adding to the financial responsibilities of Karachi’s citizens.
As reported by Samaa TV, Managing Director of the SSWMB, Imtiaz Shah, explained that this tax will be levied for door-to-door waste collection services across residential, industrial, and commercial areas.
Shah further stated that consultations with union councils and town administrations are underway, following which cabinet approval will be sought. The same company responsible for garbage collection will also manage the tax collection process.
However, many citizens have voiced concerns, questioning the efficacy of the waste management system. They ask, “Why is a tax being imposed when the garbage collection service itself is inconsistent?”
