National Assembly Approves Extension of Service Chiefs’ Tenure to Five Years

The National Assembly has approved legislation extending the tenure of the chiefs of the three armed services from three to five years and increasing the number of Supreme Court judges from 17 to 34.

Under this new law, the Supreme Court will now have 33 judges in addition to the Chief Justice of Pakistan.

Additionally, the National Assembly passed the Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Amendment Bill 2024 by a majority vote.

An amendment to the Islamabad High Court Act was also passed, raising the number of judges in the Islamabad High Court to 12.

The session saw protests from opposition members, and the National Assembly was adjourned until 11:00 AM tomorrow.
