Australia to Enforce Social Media Age Restrictions Amid Mental Health Concerns

Australia plans to introduce age restrictions for social media use, targeting a minimum age likely between 14 and 16. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced a trial period before the laws are finalized, aiming to encourage children to engage more in physical activities rather than spending time online.

This move would position Australia among the first countries to impose such restrictions, following unsuccessful attempts by the European Union. Critics argue that age limits could push minors to unregulated online spaces, potentially worsening their situation. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner and other experts have expressed concerns that such measures might limit access to crucial support and drive young people toward more dangerous online environments.

A 2023 study found that 75% of Australians aged 12 to 17 use platforms like YouTube and Instagram, underscoring the widespread use of social media among youth.
