Karachi Residents Face New Tax Burden as KMC Adds MUCT Charges to Electricity Bills

Already grappling with various taxes, Karachi residents will now see additional charges on their electricity bills as the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) introduces Municipal Utility Charges and Taxes (MUCT). According to Dawn, these charges could add up to 400 rupees to the bills.
KMC, in partnership with K-Electric, will collect the municipal charges, with officials from both organizations confirming the implementation. The charges are structured in slabs: 20 rupees for consumers using 101-200 units, 40 rupees for 201-300 units, 300 rupees for more than 700 units, and 400 rupees for commercial and industrial users.
KMC anticipates raising 4 billion rupees from this initiative. Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami has filed a contempt of court petition against Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab in the Sindh High Court.
